A founder spends a decade building a company, and inside it builds an operating environment tuned to the exact pressures of the work. At exit, the founder's operating capacity is intact and at full output. The environment is dismantled in an afternoon, by the founder's own signature.
I felt like I hit a wall. You go from 100 mph to zero.Anonymous founder
That environment does more than absorb the founder's output. While the founder runs the company, the company provisions the founder in return: an identity the role defines, daily proof that the founder's decisions change outcomes, a professional world organized around the enterprise, a financial structure that keeps capital in motion.
None of it arrives labeled as supply. The founder built every part of it, so it registers as personal capacity rather than provided structure.
Provision is experienced as authorship: that is why it stays invisible.
Provisioning runs across five domains. Each operates continuously, at no cost, and without an interface, which is why none of it appears on any inventory. Structural Deprovisioning is the term for what occurs when all five are withdrawn in a single event: not a reduction along one dimension, but the simultaneous removal of five.
The capacity these five domains were provisioning has a name. Self-Legibility: the capacity to read one's own operating state, requirements and expertise accurately, and to have that reading hold outside the institution that supplied it.

When the company is sold, the supply goes with it. The founder sees only one loss: the company, the work, the thing that occupied every day. The other loss, the supply the company was providing in return, no one sees. Because it never registered as supply, its absence produces effects the founder cannot trace to the right cause. Each available explanation carries a prediction, and post-exit conditions test those predictions under near-ideal circumstances: unlimited time, unlimited capital, no external constraint.
If the mechanism were depletion, rest resolves it. Rest becomes available in quantities no operator has ever had access to. Applied for months, the reading does not move.
If the mechanism were grief, elapsed time metabolises it. At eighteen months the structure is unchanged from month three, and new disruptions surface where resolution was forecast.
If the mechanism were indecision, information resolves it. Every option is open and fully researched. The apparatus that would evaluate them was itself part of what the institution provisioned.
None of the solutions move it, because each one is aimed to resolve a downstream effect of the source the sale removed.
Every reading a founder ever took of their own operating state ran on equipment the company supplied. Output was measured against the enterprise. Judgment was verified inside the week, by a team, a board, a market that answered back. The equipment was accurate for a decade, and it was never owned.
The question is not what to do next. The question is whether this is structural, or whether this is me.
It is structural. The instrument was institutional. It left when the institution left, and it filed no record of its own departure. Filing that record was its function.
The effects surface at different times, and that is what keeps the picture incomplete. Each one arrives on its own schedule. Every time the founder identifies what is wrong, something new surfaces that the explanation does not cover.
It presents as one thing.
UndifferentiatedContinuousUnresolvable
It is eight things, running at once.
Some disruptions are derivative: a single root, one clean line of causation. Some are emergent, appearing only where two roots compound and producing an effect neither generates alone. Some are downstream and present as primary, which is why the disruption demanding the most attention is frequently not the one carrying the load.
An approach calibrated to one of these, at one structural level, produces precisely what it was engineered to produce: accurate fit against one component, then a return to baseline as the untouched components reassert. The fit was real. The level was different. Repeated across several attempts, the pattern stops reading as a series of near-misses and starts reading as a measurement.
The whole structure has been mapped: every disruption, the order each one surfaces, the causal architecture connecting them, and the single event at the exit that all of it runs from.
